What is ginger, and where does it come from?
Ginger is a flowering spicy root plant known for its strong, zesty flavor. It offers more than just a kick to your taste buds. When minced our ground it’s also an exuberant common spice used worldwide for meals or as holistic medicine.
Ginger comes from the moist tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia.
Is ginger a spice or a vegetable?
Botanically speaking, ginger is a vegetable, specifically a spicy root plant that can be ground into a spice. Edible culinary ginger is the root plant’s fat, knobby, aromatic part.
Can you eat raw ginger?
Ginger is edible whether fresh, refined, ground into a spice, or minced.
- Fresh ginger – Fresh or minced, ginger’s heat and intense flavor are ideal for infusing dishes with a piquant zest.
- Dried ginger – Ginger dried as a spice offers a more subdued, spicy sweetness, perfect for baking and seasoning.
Should you peel ginger?
You can remove the ginger’s skin using a peeler (my preferred method) or scraping it with a spoon. If you have young, fresh ginger with very fine skin, and if it’s going to be finely chopped or grated, you can keep it simple and skip the peeling.
Do you need to wash ginger?
If you’re peeling the skin, there’s no need to wash ginger. Only if you’re not planning to peel this root plant then it should be washed.
Does ginger need to be refrigerated?
Like most plants, ginger should be refrigerated to maintain its freshness, especially after cutting it.
Can you freeze ginger?
Yes, and one of my favorite secret recipe ingredients are those amazingly convenient teaspoons of store-bought minced frozen ginger!
How do you know if ginger has gone bad?
Ginger has gone bad when the inner flesh dries out.
What can you use if you don’t have ginger?
You may be able to substitute with ground allspice, mace, cinnamon, or nutmeg. These spices have a sweet zing to keep your flavors interesting if you’re out of ginger.
