Jamaican cabbage is a colorful, flavor-packed twist on a humble vegetable, bringing bold island sunshine and Irie Caribbean flava to every single bite.

Soul Food Jamaican Cabbage Recipe

This beloved side dish simmers tender, chopped cabbage with sweet carrots, onions, butter, and aromatic seasonings for that perfect balance of savory, sweet, and subtly spiced goodness. A splash of vinegar brightens everything up, while fresh thyme and an optional Scotch bonnet pepper bring the signature warmth that sets this dish apart from a traditional Southern cabbage recipe. It’s vibrant. It’s soulful. And it carries that unmistakable One Love Island energy!

At The Soul Food Pot®, Jamaican cabbage is where Afro-Caribbean tradition meets heritage storytelling, celebrating bold island seasoning with the same soulful intention found across Black kitchens worldwide.

Why Black folks cook it this way

Across the African diaspora, we know how to turn simple ingredients into bold, unforgettable flavor. Jamaican cabbage reflects that same resourcefulness and brilliance, layering aromatics, herbs, and seasoning while honoring the vegetable’s natural texture and the spirit of Jamaica’s “Out of Many, One People” cultural heritage. It’s about balance, color, rhythm, and depth. Cooking that feeds both the body and the spirit.

What makes this Jamaican cabbage recipe unique?

This is my soulful Jamaican-style fusion recipe. We honor the island aromatics — thyme, sweet carrots, and optional Scotch bonnet — but let them simmer just a bit longer so every layer of cabbage absorbs that bold, buttery seasoning. It’s not as crisp as the most traditional versions, and that’s intentional. This is Caribbean flavor meeting Southern soul. A little softer, a little richer, and full of heritage with a “Nuff respect” twist!

Authentic Jamaican fried cabbage

Ingredients

Here’s a non-exhaustive list of the key vibrant ingredients that come together to create the bold, soulful taste of Jamaican-style cabbage, traditional at heart, with one surprising twist that takes the flavor over the top!

  • Green cabbage: The foundation of the dish, tender and perfect for soaking up all that island seasoning.
  • Carrots, onion, and garlic: Traditional island aromatic cabbage base that brings sweetness, color, and savory depth.
  • Thyme: A must-have in Jamaican cooking, adding that unmistakable earthy island aroma.
  • Scotch bonnet pepper: Optional, but traditional, delivering fruity heat and authentic Caribbean warmth.
  • Old Bay seasoning: The unexpected twist! A subtle smoky-savory layer that enhances the island spices without overpowering them.

How to make Jamaican cabbage

🥄 Shaunda says: Traditional Jamaican cabbage is typically cooked quickly to keep it tender-crisp and vibrant. My version leans into a soulful style. After testing this recipe multiple ways in my own kitchen, I intentionally chose a slightly lower, slower simmer so the flavors infuse deeper and the texture turns slightly more tender (but never mushy, of course). This is my Afro-Caribbean–inspired, soul food fusion approach: rooted in tradition, refined through experience, and cooked with respect, heritage, and love. Bless up!

  1. To make Jamaican cabbage, simmer the butter, broth, cabbage, onions, carrots, optional Scotch bonnet pepper, herbs, and seasonings until fragrant.
  2. Cover the pan, then continue cooking until the vegetables are tender.
  3. Next, uncover and continue cooking, being cautious not to overcook, as Jamaican cabbage should remain vibrant, never becoming overly softened or soggy.

How spicy is Jamaican cabbage

My Jamaican cabbage recipe is full of bold, aromatic flavor but not spicy on its own, making it perfect for everyone at the table. The seasonings, herbs, and vegetables build rich, soulful taste without bringing heat.

For those who love a kick, adding the Scotch bonnet pepper will turn up the spice and give it that signature island-style heat!

❤️ Serve it like a Southerner… with an island twist

So every bite is filled with history, heart, and a whole lotta Irie soul! Jamaican steamed cabbage pairs beautifully with classic island favorites like sweet plantains, Caribbean rice, rice and beansoxtail, and jerk chicken, turning any plate into a mini Caribbean getaway!

It’s also delicious alongside non-Jamaican dishes like slow-cooked corned beef for that Southern comfort balance. For an extra treat, serve it with Caribbean staples such as coco bread, banana fritters, fried dumplings, or festival dumplings. However you plate it, this dish bridges cultures beautifully, bringing Caribbean brightness and soulful depth together on one table.

Calories: 48kcal

Equipment

  • Large frying pan or cast-iron skillet  with a lid

Ingredients

  • 1 green cabbage 3-4 pounds, coarsely chopped or shredded
  • ½ carrot chopped or shredded
  • ½ onion chopped
  • 1 Scotch bonnet pepper *Optional
  • ½ teaspoon thyme 5-6 fresh sprigs
  • 1 stick butter unsalted
  • 1 cup chicken broth (or vegetable broth to make this dish vegetarian)
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  • Cut out the core of the cabbage and coarsely chop the leaves using a food processor or a knife. (I recommend removing the outer layer of cabbage leaves and discarding them before chopping.)
  • Turn on the stovetop to medium heat and add the butter to the pan.
  • Once the butter has melted, add the chopped cabbage, carrot, onion, optional Scotch bonnet, thyme, broth, apple cider vinegar, Old Bay seasoning, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to the pan.
  • Cover the pan with a lid and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • After 10 minutes, remove the lid and continue cooking the cabbage uncovered for about 15 minutes. Be careful not to let all the broth evaporate to prevent the cabbage from becoming dry. Then, serve and enjoy!

Glad you love this cabbage recipe – enjoy in moderation! You’ll need this much salt for the tough cabbage leaves, and it’s a whole head of cabbage in broth.
