Beautiful Soul, we’ve planned the meat. We’ve handled the sides. Dessert is under control. But there’s one thing I refuse to remember at the very last minute: What are we drinking?

Because nothing sends somebody scrambling to the store faster than realizing there’s plenty of food… and one lonely bottle of water in the refrigerator.
Not on my watch!
For Labor Day, I like to keep the drink menu simple:
Water for everybody. And one big-batch drink everybody can enjoy.
Then one or two fun extras if the gathering calls for them.
That’s it. Nobody needs a twelve-drink beverage program beside the ribs.

Think of this as your pick-and-pour guide.
You don’t need every drink below. Choose what fits the people actually coming to your table. For most gatherings, I’d start with:
- Plenty of cold water
- One big-batch Southern classic
- One fun alcohol-free option
- One clearly designated adults-only drink, if you’d like
Then put out the ice and cups and let everybody help themselves!
Featured Pour: Southern sweet tea
If I could make only one Labor Day drink for everybody at the table? Southern sweet tea.
Cold. Sweet. Classic. There’s a reason a big pitcher keeps finding its way onto Southern tables. It works with smoky BBQ, fried chicken, burgers, rich sides, and just about every other dish we’ve been planning all week.
More importantly, it’s a drink almost everyone at the gathering can reach for. So, make a big pitcher ahead, get it cold, and put out plenty of ice.
One decision handled!

🥄 Shaunda says: Start with the drink that serves the most people. Then add the fun stuff. That’s why sweet tea gets my first pitcher. I don’t start by making four specialty drinks and then realize I forgot something everybody can drink.
Think foundation first, extras second. And yes: Water counts as part of the plan. Please don’t make the Beautiful Souls hunt for hydration between glasses of sweet tea, LOL!
Want something bright and alcohol-free?
And because red drinks carry such a meaningful place in Black food celebrations, I especially love having a beautiful red option on the table. Make it ahead, chill it well, and let that color show off in a clear pitcher.
Want something simple and refreshing?
Sometimes the simplest answer on a hot afternoon is exactly the right one. Cold water with plenty of ice—and fruit!
Done.
It’s familiar, family-friendly, and easy to make by the pitcher, which is exactly what I want when I’m already coordinating an entire cookout.
Want something just for the grown folks?
If you’re serving it at your Labor Day gathering, keep the adult version clearly labeled and physically separate from the family-friendly drinks.
Because that is one mix-up we’re not having.
But if somebody does grab the wrong pitcher? No emergency meeting required—this Grown Folks version is completely alcohol-free!
It’s “grown folks” because we’ve grown up—and so have our taste buds!

❤️ Why I make it this way
Food traditions aren’t museum pieces.
We inherit flavors. We remember them. Our tastes and kitchens change. And sometimes preserving a food memory means finding a way to keep enjoying it in the season of life we’re in now.
That’s what this drink station represents to me. The memory is still there. We’ve simply made room for a new way to enjoy it.
💡 I’ve already thought this through…
So how many Labor Day drinks do you actually need? Here’s how I’d decide:
- Small gathering?
Water + one big pitcher may be plenty. - Kids and adults?
Water + one family-friendly pitcher + an optional clearly separated grown-folks drink. - Larger cookout?
Water + sweet tea + one additional family-friendly drink + an optional adult drink. - Already overwhelmed by the menu?
Buy the water. Make the sweet tea. Save yourself and stop. LOL!
You do not receive extra hosting points because your backyard has a beverage menu longer than the neighborhood restaurant!

And now let’s solve the other half of the problem: Where are we putting all this?
Set up one self-serve area away from the busiest part of your food table. Give it:
- Ice
- Cups
- Water
- Sweet tea or your main pitcher drink
- Another family-friendly option, if you’re serving one
- A clearly labeled, separate adult option
Then? Let everybody help themselves!
I don’t want you plating ribs, checking baked beans, finding somebody a fork, answering “Where’s the hot sauce?” and pouring six glasses of tea.
Spending Labor Day playing short-order cook and beverage attendant… Yeah, we’re not doing that!
👩🏾🍳 Make-It-Your-Way
There’s no required Labor Day drink menu. Don’t drink sweet tea? Razzle-dazzle water with fruit!
- Love hibiscus? Make that your main pitcher.
- Having an adults-only gathering? Maybe Grown Folks Red Kool-Aid gets the fun spot.
- Hosting children? Build the whole station around family-friendly drinks.
I’ve given you the options. You know who’s coming to your table. So, make the drink station yours.
