If you grew up with a pitcher of red Kool-Aid in the refrigerator—or sitting proudly beside the sweet tea at a Black family cookout—this Kool-Aid pie is about to taste like somebody turned a childhood memory into dessert!

Shaunda Necole slices The Soul Food Pot® Red Kool-Aid Pie, an easy no-bake dessert made with Black Cherry Kool-Aid, sweetened condensed milk, whipped topping, and graham cracker crust.

Sweet, creamy, fluffy, and unapologetically fruity, this easy no-bake pie takes the nostalgic flavor of Black Cherry Kool-Aid and folds it into a silky filling made with sweetened condensed milk and whipped topping. Just a few ingredients, no oven required, and that unmistakable red Kool-Aid flava is in every cold, creamy slice!

🪶 The Soul Food Pot Preservation Note: Kool-Aid pie isn’t an old soul food recipe pretending to have generations of history behind it. And that’s exactly why I think it’s worth documenting, because food traditions don’t stop evolving.

Kool-Aid itself became woven into generations of Black American family gatherings, cookouts, celebrations, and everyday childhood memories. Turning that familiar drink into a modern no-bake dessert shows how food culture continues to move.

We preserve what we remember, and sometimes we make something new from it. This pie belongs to that newer chapter.

The Soul Food Pot® turns the nostalgic red Kool-Aid beloved at Black Southern cookouts and family gatherings into an easy no-bake Kool-Aid pie with a creamy, fruit-forward filling and crisp pie crust.

What is Kool-Aid pie?

Kool-Aid pie is an easy no-bake dessert made by combining powdered Kool-Aid drink mix with sweetened condensed milk and whipped topping, then chilling the mixture inside a prepared pie crust.

Think of it as the dessert cousin of the red Kool-Aid that has long had a place beside soul food plates at Black family cookouts, summer gatherings, fish fries, and celebrations.

But don’t let the short ingredient list fool you.

The Kool-Aid isn’t simply there to turn the filling red. Its concentrated fruit flavor and tartness cut through the rich sweetness of condensed milk, while whipped topping gives the filling its light, almost mousse-like texture.

That’s why this ridiculously simple combination actually works!

Why this will become a Southern classic

Because some of the best Southern desserts don’t begin with complicated techniques—they begin with making something memorable out of what you already have.

Kool-Aid pie carries that spirit forward in a decidedly new-school way: familiar red Kool-Aid flavor, a cool and creamy filling, an easy no-bake method, and a dessert that belongs just as comfortably at the cookout as the pitcher that inspired it!

It’s nostalgic without pretending to be old-fashioned. A new-age Southern classic in the making!

🥄 Shaunda says: I chose Black Cherry Kool-Aid for this recipe on purpose.

When people say “red Kool-Aid,” they’re usually talking about a whole category of childhood memories, not necessarily one official flavor. Cherry, tropical punch, strawberry, black cherry… if it was red, cold, and sweet enough, so you knew what time it was!

Black cherry gives this pie that nostalgic red Kool-Aid personality while bringing a slightly deeper fruit flavor that stands up beautifully to the sweetness of the condensed milk.

And because I’ve already thought this through so you don’t have to: use the Kool-Aid packet straight from the package. Do not prepare it as a drink and don’t add sugar. The sweetened condensed milk supplies all the sweetness this pie needs.

But if this pie has you craving an actual pitcher of red Kool-Aid, I’ve thought that through, too! My Grown Folks Red Kool-Aid keeps all the nostalgic flava with a little less sweetness and no alcohol.

Standout ingredients

This is one of those recipes where there are only a few ingredients, which means every one of them has a job.

Black Cherry Kool-Aid

What it does: Provides the pie’s concentrated fruit flavor, tartness, bright red color, and nostalgic personality. The slight acidity is especially important because it keeps a filling made with sweetened condensed milk from tasting one-note sweet.

Sweetened condensed milk

What it does: Creates the rich, creamy base and provides the sweetness. Its thick consistency also gives the filling enough body to hold together once chilled.
*Be sure you’re using sweetened condensed milk, not evaporated milk. They are not interchangeable here.

Whipped topping

What it does: Lightens the condensed milk mixture and transforms it into a fluffy, creamy pie filling. Thaw it before using, and fold it in gently rather than aggressively whisking it. Keeping that incorporated air is what gives Kool-Aid pie its cloud-like texture.

Prepared graham cracker pie crust

What it does: Gives all that soft, creamy filling some necessary contrast. A graham cracker crust is especially good here because its lightly toasted, buttery flavor balances the sweet-tart Kool-Aid filling without competing with it.

How to make Kool-Aid pie

And when I say easy, Beautiful Soul, I mean easy.

  1. Whisk the flavor base — Combine sweetened condensed milk and Black Cherry Kool-Aid until smooth and thickened.
  2. Fold until fluffy — Gently fold in the thawed whipped topping for a light, creamy filling.
  3. Fill the crust — Spoon the Kool-Aid filling into a prepared graham cracker crust and smooth the top.
  4. Chill and serve — Refrigerate for at least 1 hour, then garnish, slice, and serve cold.

That’s it!

No baking. No stovetop. No gelatin. No complicated filling. And no making an actual pitcher of Kool-Aid first!

❤️ Why I make it this way

With only a few ingredients, there’s nowhere for technique to hide!

I whisk the Kool-Aid directly into the sweetened condensed milk first so the powder can dissolve evenly and I can make sure there aren’t intensely flavored pockets hiding in the filling.

Then—and only then—I gently fold in the whipped topping.

You could aggressively stir everything together and still end up with something sweet and edible. But you’ll knock out some of the air that gives this pie its beautifully light texture.

It’s one extra moment of care for a noticeably better pie.

Why does Kool-Aid pie thicken?

Here’s where this simple little recipe gets interesting.

Kool-Aid powder contains acids that interact with the milk proteins in sweetened condensed milk, helping the mixture become thicker when the two are whisked together. Then the whipped topping adds volume and structure, while refrigeration allows the finished filling to firm further.

That’s why I recommend combining the Kool-Aid and condensed milk first and whisking until thick before folding in the whipped topping. The order matters.

✨ Shaunda’s Soul Food Sense: tips, truths & traditions

Chill time isn’t just waiting time.

One hour is the minimum I recommend before serving Kool-Aid pie, but if you have time to make it several hours ahead, even better. A thoroughly chilled filling slices more cleanly and gives the flavors time to settle into each other.

For an especially firm, cold slice on a hot summer day, you can also place the pie in the freezer briefly before serving. Just don’t freeze it rock-solid unless you’re intentionally going for more of a frozen-dessert texture.

👩🏾‍🍳 Make-It-Your-Way

Black cherry is my choice for this version because I wanted the pie rooted specifically in that nostalgic red Kool-Aid experience.

But once you understand the formula, Kool-Aid pie practically begs you to play with it!

Try another favorite Kool-Aid flavor for a completely different pie. Cherry and tropical punch keep that classic red-drink energy, while flavors like lemonade, blue raspberry, or grape take the dessert in another direction entirely.

Just remember: changing the Kool-Aid flavor can change not only the color but also the balance of tartness and fruit flavor.

Beautiful Souls ask the best questions, so here are my straight answers from years of making red Kool-Aid pie!

❓Cut to the Crust Q&A

Shaunda’s straight answers to Kool-Aid pie questions y’all ask.

What does Kool-Aid pie taste like?

It’s sweet, creamy, fruity, and slightly tangy, with the unmistakable concentrated flavor of whichever Kool-Aid variety you use. Black cherry gives this version a bold berry-cherry flavor that keeps the rich condensed milk from tasting overly heavy.

Do you make the Kool-Aid before adding it to the pie?

No. Add the dry Kool-Aid powder directly from the packet to the sweetened condensed milk. Do not add water or the sugar normally used to make Kool-Aid.

Does Kool-Aid pie need sugar?

No additional sugar is necessary. Sweetened condensed milk is already very sweet, and adding the sugar called for on the Kool-Aid drink instructions would make the pie unnecessarily sweet.

Can you use evaporated milk instead of sweetened condensed milk?

No. Sweetened condensed milk provides both sweetness and the thick consistency needed for this filling. Evaporated milk is much thinner and unsweetened, so it won’t produce the same result.

Can I use a graham cracker crust for Kool-Aid pie?

Yes. In fact, a graham cracker crust is my favorite pairing because its buttery, lightly toasted flavor gives the creamy filling some texture and balances the fruitiness.

How long does Kool-Aid pie need to chill?

Chill the pie for at least 1 hour before serving. Longer refrigeration will generally produce a firmer, cleaner slice.

Can you make Kool-Aid pie ahead of time?

Absolutely. This is exactly the kind of dessert I like for entertaining because the refrigerator does the work while you move on to everything else. Make it earlier in the day or the night before and keep it refrigerated until you’re ready to serve.

Does Kool-Aid pie need to be refrigerated?

Yes. Because the filling contains sweetened condensed milk and whipped topping, Kool-Aid pie should remain refrigerated when you’re not serving it.

Can Kool-Aid pie be frozen?

Yes. Freezing will give it a firmer, more frozen-dessert consistency. For the creamy texture intended in this recipe, refrigerate it instead and serve chilled.

How to store Kool-Aid pie

Cover the pie and store it in the refrigerator until ready to serve. For the best texture, keep it cold and return leftovers to the refrigerator promptly rather than allowing the filling to sit out for an extended period.

And if you’re bringing Kool-Aid pie to a cookout or gathering, transport it chilled in an insulated cooler or carrier with ice packs. Because the only thing this pie should be doing in the summer heat is disappearing slice by slice!

Beautiful Souls, I have to know: what was YOUR red Kool-Aid flavor growing up? ❤️😂 I chose Black Cherry for this pie because I love its deeper fruity flavor, but Cherry, Tropical Punch, and Strawberry all bring back memories! And if you make this Red Kool-Aid Pie, come back and tell me which flavor you used. New traditions from old memories! ❤️🪶
