Grilled fruit & vegetables
One of our family’s favorite summer pastimes is backyard grilling. I specify “backyard” because we do have neighbors that grill in the front yard. They’re “the” neighbors with a tire on a rope tied to their over-grown tree— in the front yard.
Where’s Cynthia when you need her? You know, Cynthia. President of the HOA, as seen in another marketing genius Geico commercial. Cynthia will ninja-chainsaw chop down your mailbox or hanging flowers if they’re even a half an inch over-regulation!
My kinda gal when it comes to preserving the value of my real estate. She moves in swift!
Real estate rule 101: never buy a house in a cul de sac.
We live cul de sac free. We’re the house that’s positioned just right without any neighbors directly across from us. And even so, we’ve never obnoxiously grilled in the front yard.
But the backyard? Made for grilling and chillin! I love grilled recipes and the smell of summer when the charcoal’s lit and creates the blurred view you can see just above the smoke over the grill.
The Mister is a retired fireman— 25 years! You’d think I’d know the proper term for the “blurred view” in the smoke above the grill. I don’t. And I’m gonna roll with calling it my favorite hazy summer view. It means foods a cooking— and that’s my favorite part!
Probably now more than ever, and because we’re not able to travel like in a traditional summer, we’re spending all of our time at home.
Admittedly, I’d give it all up forever— the smell of freshly lit charcoal and the hazy views above the grill. To go there again in 2020, to the Santa Monica Pier and watch the iconic neon Ferris wheel at play. All the while, indulging in an overstuffed street taco from a food truck.
I’d order beef and The Mister, chicken with mango salsa. He always lets me taste. That’s also the kinda stuff summers are made of!
But in the age of COVID and California on the brink of a second shut down, above all, we’re thankful to still enjoy traditions at home. Especially with grilled recipes.
Hey, grill, hey!
We’re not traditional grillers. Meaning we like to experiment with new grilled recipes and ideas. (California food truck in our future. Maybe?) Including the inclusion of fruit on the BBQ!
America’s favorite grilled veggie is hands down corn on the cob. Next time you’re in LA, head downtown for grilled and spiced Mexican street corn hot off the corn cart! And next time you fire up the grill, think California style.
Do add corn— and use the recipe below. And also bring in the watermelon, pineapple and avocado. Try something new on the barbie!
Oh, and if you, too, grill any untraditional fruits or veggies, leave a comment below. We love to try more of something new!

You can also grill fruit & veggies in a grill pan on the stove if you’d like to make these recipes indoors.
We also tried grilling artichoke, and that was an epic fail! Even after following the Pinterest recipe to a T! (Did you know there’s fur on the inside of an artichoke?)
If you have experience with grilled artichoke, please help a sista out and tell me how to in a comment below!
