How to make juicy Southern cheddar ranch burgers in the Instant Pot
You put the burgers in the pot, walk away, and return to serve up major deliciousness! Perfect today for a dining-out-like experience served comfortably at home.
Homemade burgers are always the best. At my house, we eat them probably once every other week because they make for an easy, relaxed dinner that everyone loves!
Today, I took over dinner for The Mister, who was installing an AC unit in his new man cave.
Lucky for me, he had already planned for burgers and fries, so my only job was to pull the patties out of the freezer and place them on the grill.
Then I thought— move over grill – and hello Instant Pot!

I used frozen hamburger patties from the freezer.
But this recipe applies to handmade ground beef burgers, too!

What is the secret to juicy hamburgers?
For the most tender, juicy homemade burgers, you want 80/20 ground beef – 80% lean beef and 20% fat.
Cooking burgers in a pressure cooker pot is also revolutionary!
I’m no stranger to the secret sauce of cooking burgers in a pot.
My Southern cooking mom is often ahead of her time. She always cooks her burgers on the stovetop and in a pot.
This used to fascinate my cousins when we were kids, and they came to visit. They were convinced that the pot is what made the burgers juicier and taste better!
They even suggested to their moms at home to make hamburgers in a pot, too!
So when I first learned of burgers being made in today’s Instant Pot, it wasn’t new news to me!
Kitchen equipment for juicy Southern cheddar ranch burgers
- Instant Pot electric pressure cooker
- Instant Pot trivet inner rack
- aluminum foil (I’ve also heard of parchment paper being used in place of foil, but I’ve never tried it to know if it affects the cooking time.)
Ingredients for juicy Southern cheddar ranch burgers
- 4 burger patties (thawed), or 1 pound of 80/20 ground beef for handmade patties
- 1 tablespoon of your favorite all-purpose seasoning salt (I used Famous Dave’s Steak & Burger Seasoning)
- ½ teaspoon of black pepper
- 1 ½ cups of water
- 4 burger buns
Cheddar ranch burgers sauce ingredients
- 2 tablespoons of ranch seasoning
- 3 teaspoons of steak sauce
- 1 teaspoon of horseradish
- ¾ cup of shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions for Southern cheddar ranch burgers
(Frozen burger patty instructions are below.)

Mix the ground beef, seasoning salt, pepper, ranch dressing, steak sauce, horseradish and cheese in a medium-size mixing bowl and mix well until combined. If using pre-made burger patties, brush the ranch sauce mixture on both sides of each hamburger patty. Pro tip: It may be easier to add the ranch sauce to the burger patties in step 3 on the foil.

Form 4 hamburger patties with the ground beef mixture.

Wrap each burger in foil.

Pour water into the Instant Pot stainless steel inner pot.

Place the Instant Pot trivet inner rack inside the inner pot.

Place the foil-wrapped burgers on the rack.

Close the Instant Pot lid (make sure the valve is in the sealing position – up) and pressure cook on high for 10 minutes.

When the cooking time is finished, allow a natural release of pressure for at least 5 minutes.

To open the Instant Pot lid, move the valve to ‘venting’ and manually release any remaining pressure, if applicable.

Remove the burgers from the inner pot and unwrap the foil.

Place burgers on buns, serve with your favorite condiments and enjoy!
