Southern Peach Cobbler With Canned Peaches

Can you use canned instead of fresh peaches in cobbler?

Traditionally, this dessert uses fresh peaches. However, canned peaches provide a delightful shortcut without losing the soulful flavors and seasonings.

This approach ensures that the essence of this soul food dessert remains intact, delivering the same sweet and inviting taste that has made it a cherished family recipe for generations.

The best part? Canned peaches make this a recipe you can enjoy year-round!

Ingredients

Southern peach cobbler is a classic comfort food best made from scratch using traditional Southern soul food seasonings, spices, biscuit dough, and ripe peaches.

Surprisingly, canned peaches work just as well for this recipe, simplifying the cobbler-making process. Even with canned peaches, the fruit is baked, allowing the flavors of tradition and taste to blend perfectly!

  • Canned peaches: Serve as a convenient and flavorful base, allowing this recipe to be enjoyed year-round without compromising its traditional taste. The prepared peaches can be sourced from a can or a jar. You could also make cobbler with frozen peaches!
  • Sugar and spices: Brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger merge to create a deep, sweet-spicy layer that enhances the natural peach flavors.
  • Thickening agents: Cold water and cornstarch work together, thickening the peach juice into a rich syrup that binds the fruit mixture.
  • Cobbler batter: A simple blend of Bisquick, milk, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract forms a light, fluffy topping, contrasting beautifully with the dense, fruity layer beneath.

Here I am, slicing and serving my Southern peach cobbler recipe.

Mistakes to avoid when making Southern peach cobbler with canned peaches

  • Should you drain canned peaches? When preparing canned peaches for your cobbler, drain them thoroughly. And avoid pouring out the entire can, as the juice can make the dish too watery.
  • What is the best kind of canned peaches to use in a peach cobbler? Sliced peaches are the best option for cobbler. They save you time and effort by eliminating the need for them to be cut.
  • Can you use whole canned peaches? You can use whole canned or jarred peaches. Just quarter them before adding them to the recipe.

Equipment

Ingredients

Ingredients for the peach cobbler filling

  • 4 cups peaches Two 28 oz. cans, drained
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon ginger minced
  • ¼ cup water cold
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

Ingredients for the cobbler batter

  • 2 cups Bisquick
  • 1 cup milk
  • ¾ cup sugar granulated
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup butter melted

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Place the butter in the baking dish and then place the dish in the oven to melt the butter while the oven is preheating.
  • Remove the melted butter from the oven after a few minutes and set it aside.
  • To drain canned or jarred peaches easily, place a colander in the sink and pour them into the colander after opening them.
  • In a medium-sized bowl, mix the ingredients for the peach filling: peaches, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.
  • Add the cornstarch to the cold water and stir until smooth.
  • Pour the cornstarch mixture into the peach mixture.
  • Stir the peach mixture to combine the ingredients and then set aside.
  • In a second medium-sized bowl, whisk the ingredients for the cobbler batter: Bisquick, milk, sugar, and vanilla.
  • Pour the Bisquick mixture over the melted butter in the baking pan.
  • Then, pour the peaches into the Bisquick mixture (the dough will rise around the peaches as it bakes).
  • Bake at 350 degrees F for 50-60 minutes. Watch the cobbler while baking, and bake until the cobbler dough is golden brown.
  • To test whether the cobbler is done, insert a toothpick into the center of the dough. If it comes out clean, it is done. This is important because you don't want the dough under the top crust to still be raw.
  • Serve this easy Southern peach cobbler recipe warm, and enjoy!
