  • 32 oz. baked beans Two 16 oz. cans
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • ¾ cup BBQ sauce
  • 1 teaspoon mustard ground
  • 1 cups beef broth use vegetable broth for vegetarian and vegan friendly beans
  • 1 cup yellow onion diced
  • ½ cup green bell pepper diced
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic minced
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon ground
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  • Add the broth, onion, and bell pepper to a large skillet and sauté over medium-high heat, stirring often, until everything softens, after about 3-5 minutes.
  • Stir in the seasonings and sauces: brown sugar, tomato paste, BBQ sauce, ground mustard, smoked paprika, garlic, cinnamon, salt, and black pepper, and cook for 1 to 2 minutes until combined.
  • Pour the baked beans directly from the can and stir to mix with the homemade doctored-up baked bean sauce.
  • Bring the bean mixture to a boil, remove the skillet from the stovetop, and turn off the burner heat.
  • If using a cast iron skillet, place it directly in the oven to bake the beans. Alternatively, transfer the beans to a baking dish and bake for 30 minutes or until they're bubbly and syrupy.

    I usually pan fry 1 or 2 strips of thin sliced bacon, and cook the bell pepper, onion, and a small hot pepper in the drippings. Add brown sugar and yellow mustard to the beans and barely simmer for an hour or so.Then just prior to serving, crumble the bacon and sprinkle on top. Easy and tasty!
